    H I S T O R Y
Ath. Protopapas Winery was established in 1985 by the chemical engineer Athanasios Protopapas. After an international career in the oil industry, he left his post as director of the Prinos refineries so as to devote himself to the production of wine in a region with an age-old tradition and the first laws concerning the mark of origin of wines in history (Thasos, 5th century BC ).
The vineyard owned by the company is situated on mount Pagaeon. In an area of 150 acres, choice Greek and foreign varieties are cultivated, the first harvest of which was marketed in 1996. For years now, the vineyard of St. Dionysios Monastery at Monoxylitis on Mount Athos has been providing the grapes from 100 acres of more than 20 different known and unknown varieties. Vineyards of local producers with the variety Giorgina on Thasos and Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc in Kavala are also used for the production of the winery.
The headquarters of the company is its central winery in Nea Peramos, Kavala, whereas the vinification of the grapes from Mount Athos takes place in the traditional winery of the monastery next to the vineyard. A new, modern winery has been established in the company's own vineyard on Mount Pagaeon, whose wines are allowed to use the label "Regional Pagaeoritic Wine".
