The Estate´s
vineyards, spread around
the family mansion and the winery, in an area where soil and climatic conditions
are ideal for the making of high-quality red wines, produce two chief and
a handful of experimental varieties.
The
former are the Italian Refosco, also known in the French Savoie as Mondeuse
Noire, and the Greek Mavrodaphne. Both are "recommended" varieties for
Ilia.
The
latter, both Greek and foreign, are experimental plantings aimed at the
production of new wines in the immediate future. These are the red Augustiatis,
Mourvedre, Merlot, Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese
and Grenache and the white Viognier, Turkopula, Ribolla Gialla, Malvazia
Aromatica and Sauvignon Blanc.

The
Mercouri Estate is located on the plateau of Cape Ichthys, in Ilia, Western
Peloponnese, near the village of Korakohori. It is an old, spacious farm
boasting a 150-year long tradition in the production of wine, olive oil
and (in the past) corinthian raisin.
The
first vineyard was established in 1870, the year when Theodoros Mercouris
brought Refosco cuttings from Northern Italy. Later on, towards the end
of the century, the wine produced at the Estate was exported to Europe.
Caiques loaded with oak casks, sailed from the nearby bay to the harbour
of Trieste. At the same time, the Estate´s vineyard, already famous in
Ilia, was supplying the local vineyards with Refosco or "Mercouri" cuttings
(as the variety became to be known localy) for many decades to come.
In
the 1930s, Leonidas Mercouris built a modern (for the standards of the
time) winery with underground tanks of a capacity of 300 tons. The winery
was operating until 1955.
Since
1990, the 3rd and 4th generation of the family have implemented a renovation
programme aiming at the revival of the Estate's wine-making capacity. In
that context, the winery was reconstructed and modernized, the vineyards
were renovated with new plantings, acreage was increased to a total of
8 hectares and Mercouri Estate adopted the legal status of a limited liability
company. |
