The
Katogi Averoff Winery S.A. was inspired and created by Evangelos Averoff-Tossizza,
a man of letters and action, writer and politician, an eminent figure in
the public life of modern Greece.
In
the early sixties, Averoff discovered an old ledger of 1732, which suggested
that at that time approximately 500,000 bottles of wine were produced in
the almost inaccessible and deserted area of Pindus. Thus, a vision was
born that once again vines could be cultivated on the barren slopes. With
untiring enthusiasm, Averoff began to investigate the possibilities for
viniculture in the area. He consulted scientists from Greece and abroad
and finally decided to import vines from Bordeaux and plant the first Cabernet
Sauvignon vineyards in Greece.
Today
the company’s vineyards cover an area of 15 hectares and are located at
an altitude of 950-1,000 meters. They are the highest vineyards in the
country -a fact which perhaps accounts for the unique personality of Katogi
wines. The company’s vineyards (planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet
Franc, Merlot, Traminer and Debina vines) form the basis for the production
of Katogi wines. Recently, new vineyards (covering an area of 10 hectares)
have been planted in Voutsas (Ioannina area) with Traminer, Chardonnay,
Merlot, Cabernet and Debina. Co-operation with other vineyards from Peloponnese
and Northwestern Greece, allows for additional supplies and varieties.
The
company's main plant, where the wine-making and ageing take place, is a
building complex covering 2,500 m2, on the eastern outskirts of Metsovo.
The existing capacity in inox tanks is 500 tons, whereas the cellars house
1,000 oak barrels where certain types of wines age for two years before
bottling.
The
company is certified under the System of Quality Control to the ISO 9002:1984
standard and aims to obtain the environmental ISO 14000 within the year
2000. |
