H
I S T O R Y
One
of the most well-known exporters of sultanas at the beginning
of the century that has just gone by was Nikos Athanassiadis.
Even though his entrepreneural activities were manifold, wine
growing was his favourite, perhaps because of a large sultanina-growing
estate, which he was running in Iraklio, Crete. In 1932, however,
he decided to establish a new wine-growing estate in the vicinity
of Athens. The attention of Nikos Athanassiadis is attracted by
the northern slopes of Penteli, which is an area that has been
known as a wine-growing region since ancient times, when vines,
a gift from Dionysos to King Ikarios, were first grown in Greece.
There, in Stamata, Nikos Athanassiadis purchases a large piece
of land where he plants vines. A few years later he undertakes
the construction of the production plant. Being endowed with the
spirit of a pioneer, he bottles his produce and sells it in Athens.
Towards
the end of the fifties, Nikos Athanassiadis's daughter Ada takes
over the family business. With the help of her husband Diogenis
Harlaftis she gives a new impulse, beginning with the re-cultivation
of the vineyard and planting choice new varieties like Cabernet
Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Asyrtiko. The growth of these varieties
on the northern slopes of Mount Penteli in the region of Stamata
is excellent. The morphology and composition of the ground have
created ideal conditions for the production of high qualitiy wines.
The dry calcareous subsoil of the vineyard is covered by a layer
of clay, a combination which favours proper drainage and the rewarming
of the ground to the great benefit of the vines.
HARLAFTIS
ESTATE is a model wine growing enterprise, where all the different
stages of production have been combined in one establishment.
As soon as the grapes have been harvested, they are immediately
taken to the wine press, which is located on the estate. There,
thanks to the modern technical equipment, we employ the latest
methods of wine making. The storage and maturation of the wine
takes place in underground vaults with stable temperature, where
the tanks and the French oak barrels are located. The activities
of the estate are expanding and consolidating. Thus, as time goes
by, the winery is recognized and established as a pioneer in the
production of high quality wines.
It
is a result of these endeavours that HARLAFTIS ESTATE today is
one of the most respected wine-growing enterprises in Greece.
In the course of time, the grandchildren of Nikos Athanassiadis,
Emilia and Nikos Harlaftis take over the firm. It is their aim
to continue the tradition and to develop it further. The family
character of the enterprise remains unchanged, and today, with
new inspiration, the vineyard continues its successful course
producing exquisite qualities of wines of high specification. |
